Volunteers Needed for Brain Stimulation and Sleep Study
We are recruiting healthy volunteers for a research study exploring Temporal Interference (TI) stimulation, a new, safe, non-invasive brain stimulation technique. Our aim is to understand how TI stimulation influences memory processes and how stimulation during wakefulness or sleep affects memory consolidation.
What’s involved:
- Complete simple behavioural memory tasks
- Experience state-of-the-art functional brain imaging using MRI
- 1 MRI session and up to 3 nap sessions (approximately 5 hours each)
Compensation:
- £15 per hour for each visit
- Up to £20 for travel expenses per visit
You will have the opportunity to contribute to research to help understand memory function as well as experience cutting-edge neuroscience.

The Role of REM Sleep and its Relation to Brain Function in Humans
What does the study involve?
The study takes place over 5 weeks. The first week involves 7–10 days of at-home sleep assessments, including the use of a variety of sleep/activity measuring devices, cognitive assessments, and questionnaires.
Following this, there will be one adaptation overnight session and 3 extended overnight sessions at the Surrey Sleep Research Centre, each a week apart. Each extended night includes a wide range of sleep measuring devices, questionnaires, and cognitive tasks. During the extended overnight sessions, you will have 2 blood samples taken — one in the evening and one in the morning.
You will also be asked to attend a screening visit, a visit to pick up the equipment for the at-home monitoring, and to return the equipment on the adaptation night.
Who is eligible?
To take part, you must be:
- Aged 18–35 or 65–85 years
- Have a BMI below 30
- Registered with a GP
You cannot take part if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have been diagnosed with a significant medical condition, changed medication, or been hospitalised in the past 3 months
- Have a medical condition requiring treatment incompatible with the protocol (e.g. CPAP treatment, administration of medication by someone else)
- Have a medical condition that would make participation unsafe (e.g. poorly controlled diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease)
- Have a previously diagnosed neurologic, psychiatric, or sleep disorder
- Are taking or likely to start medication that may interfere with cognition (e.g. stimulants, antidepressants, neuroleptics)
- Have any severe skin condition, burn, or injury on your scalp or head
- Have had skull surgery or other brain or spinal cord surgery
- Have conducted shift work, maintained an irregular sleep/wake schedule, or travelled through more than 2 time zones in the preceding month
- Have any metal or electronic objects in the upper part of your body (e.g. a pacemaker; dental fillings/implants or earrings are fine)
- Have hearing deficits or use a hearing device
- Have alcohol intake exceeding 28 units per week or are abusing drugs
This study offers compensation for participation.
